Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) TO126
The Tawny Owl is one of Britain’s best-known owls, famous for its hooting and screeching. The familiar sound “kew-whit” is the female, and the “hoo ho ho hoo hoo hoo hoo” is the male (hence - Tu wit – Tu woo).
The Tawny Owl favours woodlands and roosts in tree holes. They will often make use of nesting boxes too. They prey on mainly small mammals, birds, insects and worms. Their hearing is the key to their successful hunting. Their ears are asymmetrical (one ear higher than the other). This means they hear
a sound twice in very close succession, helping to accurately pinpoint their prey. The Tawny Owl’s acute hearing ability in conjunction with their near silent flight and huge talons makes them formidable hunters of the night.
