The Great Tit is the largest tit in the UK and has distinctive yellow, black and white colourations. It is a very vocal bird with up to 40 different calls. One easily recognised call is the 2 syllable territorial call, “teacher teacher”. It has been studied that Great Tits in urban areas where there is a dull noise pollution, have changed their call to one of a higher frequency. The Great Tit can be seen in woodlands, parks and gardens. It feeds mainly on insects, spiders, seeds and nuts but when food is scarcer in the winter months it has been known to take hibernating Pipistrelle bats!
The Great Tit has shown intelligence and resourceful behaviour by using conifer needles to extract larvae from holes in trees.
