The Brown Hare is widespread in Britain, however surveys show that numbers have declined over the last century most likely due to changes in farming methods. Their habitat is mainly open pasture and farmland. The hare can be distinguished from the rabbit by its much larger size and black tipped ears.
Hares have large strong hind legs and can exceed speeds of 35 mph. Unlike the rabbit, the Brown Hare does not burrow and does not have a regular home. A hare will dig a shallow hole wider at the back than the front, this is called a form. The hare will give birth in a form, and will also take refuge by lying motionless in the form until any danger passes.
